Zhang Fuming (b. 1989) is a Singapore-based artist whose practice centers on printmaking, particularly in the realm of traditional black-and-white woodblock prints. With a steadfast dedication to the hands-on, physical process of relief carving, Fuming employs the medium’s precision and immediacy to craft compelling social commentaries through a contemporary realist lens.

Fuming’s approach extends beyond conventional woodblock printing on paper, embracing the materiality of wood itself to amplify the gestures, textures, and emotive nuances embedded within his carvings. This profound connection to the tactile medium highlights the unique depth of woodblock printing as an art form and its enduring relevance in modern artistic discourse.

The working titles of Fuming’s exhibitions reflect a non-linear narrative that captures the multifaceted influences shaping his evolving practice. These themes explore cultural introspection, perseverance, and contemporary issues through the lens of a deeply personal yet universal storytelling style.

A recipient of the AAF Young Talent Programme 2014/2015, Fuming debuted his solo exhibition, The Quest; The Exquisite Rice Bowl (Ion Art Gallery, 2015), to critical acclaim. Subsequent exhibitions include Poised for Success (AC43 Gallery, 2016), V. Atas (Telok Ayer Arts Club, 2019), and Props and Poses (AC43 Gallery, 2022). His works have also been featured in notable group exhibitions such as Spatial Narratives (Art Porters, 2023), Bon à Tirer (AC43 Gallery, 2018), and The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Art Week (Xiamen, 2016), underscoring his role in championing the significance of printmaking in contemporary art.

As a passionate advocate for the printmaking community, Fuming regularly organizes print exchanges, workshops, and exhibitions. He collaborates with institutions on outreach programs, offering technical support and mentoring aspiring practitioners. This commitment underscores his vision of expanding the medium’s reach while cultivating the next generation of artists.

Fuming is also the founder of Drawing Etc. Art Supplies & Creative Space, an artist-run supply store and events space established in 2022. Beyond serving as a retail hub, the space has become a platform for creative expression and collaboration, hosting exhibitions, masterclasses, and printmaking outreach initiatives.

Zhang Fuming was conferred the prestigious Young Artist Award (2024), Singapore’s highest accolade for art practitioners aged 35 and below. This honor recognizes his outstanding contributions to printmaking and his pivotal role in enriching Singapore’s visual arts scene.
