ZHANG FUMING
Artist / Printmaker
Biography
b. 1989, Zhang Fuming is trained in the discipline of Printmaking and works with mediums largely of traditional origin. He favours the direct and physical nature of printing mediums in particularly relief wood carvings. Harnessing the direct, efficient means of black-white narratives to communicate with his viewers, he creates works reprising the role of social commentary and realism in a contemporary context.
Venturing beyond the conventional practice of printmaking discipline of works on paper, Fuming embraces the materiality of wood blocks to better translate the expression and gestures of his carvings, tension and contrast from the seemingly brutish determination of the artist to create the desired image against the woodgrain.
Fuming is a recipient of the AAF Young Talent Programme 2014/2015 and presented his debut Solo exhibition entitled The Quest; The Exquisite Rice Bowl in Ion Arts Gallery, 2015. Other Solo Exhibitions he has presented includes Poised for Success (2016, AC43 Gallery), V. Atas (2019, Telok Ayer Arts Club) and Props and Poses (2022, AC43 Gallery).
He has been involved in many group exhibition predominantly in Singapore due to the contextual areas of his work. Group Exhibition he's involved in includes Spatial Narratives (Art Porters, Singapore, 2023), Bon A Tirer (AC43 Gallery, Singapore, 2018), You don’t Need 100 Editions (Institute of Contemporary Arts, Singapore, 2018), Singapore Printmaking Festival (Singapore Art Week, Millennial Walk, 2017), The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Art Week (Xiamen, Fujian Province, China, 2016), and many more.
In June 2022, Fuming embarked on a venture to create an artist-run art supplies store called Drawing Etc. Art Supplies. His goal is to foster a cohesive and interconnected art community in Singapore by offering a curated range of highly sought-after products tailored to the needs of professional artists, students, and hobbyists. Through collaborative feedback and a deep understanding of consumer needs, Drawing Etc. became a hub for artistic expression and creativity.
In December 2023, Fuming expanded his creative endeavors by launching a separate non-retail Creative Space in Arab Street. This space, serving as an exhibition gallery and art workshop venue, aimed to facilitate creative exchange among artists and practitioners from all walks of life. Taking on the roles of curator and program lead, Fuming orchestrated the successful launch of the space's inaugural event—a year-end exhibition—through an open call for submissions. The response was overwhelming, with over 500 entries received, culminating in the selection of 110 works from 100 artists across Singapore.
Since then, Fuming has organized numerous programs, including masterclasses led by professional artists, exhibitions, workshops, talks, and public drawing and painting sessions. His commitment to fostering artistic growth and community engagement continues to enrich the cultural landscape of Singapore.
